Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Deke Slayton going to space with Apollo-Soyuz Test Project! All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
July 15 – Rocket Day, 10 AM – 1 PM, at the museum, create and launch air rockets, straw rockets, and Alka Seltzer rockets, 50th anniversary of the Apollo launch on July 15, 1975.
July 17 – Hands Around the Museum, 2 PM, at the museum, gather for a group picture with the Deke Slayton statue, circle the museum holding hands to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic handshake that symbolized the beginning of internation cooperation in space which took place July 17, 1975, at 2:17 PM CT.
July 18 – Family reunion for direct descendants of Morey & Tryphosa Slaton, Hans & Marie Erickson, Lars & Embjor Larson, and Magnus & Andrine Swenson, Leon Community Center, not open to the general public.
July 19 – Panel discussion, 1 PM, at Sparta High School, featuring Kent Slayton, Deke’s son; Bill Moon, retired NASA flight controller for ASPT; and Jeff Williams, retired astronaut from Winter, WI who spent over 500 days on the International Space Station during 4 missions; there will be time for audience questions and autographs, books will also be available at the event.
July 20 – Sharing Space with Deke featuring ASTP kids, 3 PM, at museum or via Zoom, $10, Kent Slayton will be in person, Dionne and Karin Stafford and Stephanie Brand will be on Zoom.
