First ocean vessel of 2024 leaves Twin Ports

The first ocean-going vessel of the 2024 shipping season has left the Port of Duluth.  The Barbro G arrived at the Ceres Riverland Ag Terminal April 1st and departed Friday for Algeria with 22,000 short tons of durum wheat.  It has already crossed most of Lake Erie as of Monday morning.

April 1st is the second-earliest recorded arrival of an ocean-going ship to the Port of Duluth.  Deb DeLuca with the Duluth Port Authority says the first full Seaway transit is a true sign of spring and a reminder of the economic impact these ships deliver to the region.

Grain is the top export item from the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin with more than 35 million tons leaving each year.  Most of that is spring and durum wheat, corn, and soybeans.
