A song released nearly a decade ago has just crossed a line no country track had reached before. Tennessee Whiskey has now surpassed 20 million units in the United States, earning a Double Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
The total combines streaming, digital downloads, and physical sales. That number reflects long-term listening rather than a brief chart moment. It also makes the track the first country song to reach this level under RIAA standards.
Written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove in the early 1980s, Tennessee Whiskey had earlier versions before finding its widest audience years later. Chris Stapleton recorded his interpretation for his 2015 album Traveller. The performance stood out for its stripped-down arrangement and vocal delivery, which helped the song gain steady traction over time.
Live performances, radio exposure, and consistent streaming kept the track in circulation well beyond its release window. The certification points to how listener behavior has shifted, with catalog songs now able to grow gradually and reach record-setting totals years after their debut.
